BMI Categories for Indians

The standard WHO BMI chart differs slightly from the guidelines recommended for the Indian population. Indians are generally genetically prone to higher abdominal fat and lower muscle mass, putting them at higher risk of lifestyle diseases at lower BMI levels.

Underweight: Below 18.5

Normal: 18.5 - 22.9

Overweight: 23.0 - 24.9

Obese: 25.0 and above

Is BMI Enough?

While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has limitations. It does not distinguish between fat and muscle mass. Therefore, athletes with high muscle mass might be classified as overweight. It's always best to consult a healthcare provider and measure body fat percentage for a comprehensive health assessment.

Example

A person who is 170cm tall and weighs 65kg has a BMI of 65 / (1.7 × 1.7) ≈ 22.5, which falls in the Normal range on the Indian BMI chart.

Common Use Cases

  • General health screening and weight-category tracking.
  • Setting a baseline before starting a fitness or weight-management plan.
  • Quick reference during a medical checkup.

FAQs

Is this a BMI calculator for India?

Yes — this calculator uses the lower Indian/Asian BMI classification thresholds shown above (Underweight below 18.5, Normal 18.5-22.9, Overweight 23-24.9, Obese 25 and above) rather than the standard WHO global cutoffs (which set the overweight threshold at 25 and obese at 30). It works for anyone, anywhere — just enter your height and weight in metric or imperial units; there's no region lock or language requirement.

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

No — BMI doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution, so it can be misleading for athletes, pregnant women, and older adults. It's best used as a general screening tool.

What's a healthy BMI range?

For the Indian BMI chart, 18.5–22.9 is considered normal — slightly lower than the WHO's global standard of 18.5–24.9, reflecting a higher health risk at lower BMI levels in South Asian populations.
