How VAT is calculated
VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax applied at each stage of the supply chain in the UK, EU, and many other countries. This tool works as both a net VAT calculator — add VAT to a net (pre-tax) price by multiplying by the rate and adding it to the original amount — and an exclude VAT calculator or vat included calculator, which removes VAT from a VAT-inclusive gross price by dividing the gross amount by (1 + rate) to find the net amount, then subtracting to get the VAT portion.
Remove VAT: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate)
Example
A UK product priced at £100 (net) with 20% standard VAT becomes £120 (gross). Working backwards, a £120 gross price at 20% VAT has a net price of £100 and £20 of VAT included. As a smaller example, a £10 net price at 20% VAT has a VAT amount of £2, making the gross total £12 — and a £400 net price at 20% VAT has a VAT amount of £80, making the gross total £480.
Common Use Cases
- Working out the VAT-inclusive (gross) price to quote customers.
- Extracting the net price and VAT amount from a receipt or invoice.
- Comparing prices across countries with different VAT rates.
- Working out the VAT amount on a quote or invoice, such as "5500 plus VAT".
- Checking the VAT portion separately from import duty when costing goods from abroad.
FAQs
Is this the standard rate or a reduced rate?
This calculator uses each country's standard VAT rate. Most countries also apply reduced rates (often 0-15%) to specific categories like food, books, or children's clothing — check your local tax authority if your goods or services qualify for a reduced rate.
Is this pricing accurate?
Rates are checked against official/EU sources as of August 2026 but change with national budgets — always confirm the current rate before invoicing or filing.
How do I calculate VAT from a gross amount?
Switch to "Remove VAT" mode above and enter the gross (VAT-inclusive) figure — the calculator divides it by (1 + rate) to show the net price and the VAT amount separately.
How do I add VAT to a price?
Select "Add VAT" mode, enter the net amount excluding VAT, and choose the correct rate — the calculator multiplies the net price by the VAT rate and adds it to give the VAT-inclusive gross total. For example, adding 20% UK VAT to £5,500 ("5500 plus VAT") comes to £6,600.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Select "Remove VAT" mode and enter the gross (VAT-inclusive) price. The calculator divides it by (1 + rate) to give you the price excluding VAT — the net amount — along with the VAT portion that was included in the original figure.
What's the difference between net, VAT, and gross amounts?
The net amount excludes VAT — it's the price before tax. The gross amount is VAT-inclusive (net + VAT), which is what is meant by "net of VAT" and what a vat included calculator or net VAT calculator shows side by side once you enter your figure.
How is VAT calculated as a percentage?
VAT is calculated by multiplying the net price by the VAT rate as a decimal (rate ÷ 100). For example, the VAT amount on £10 at the UK's 20% rate is £10 × 0.20 = £2, and VAT on £400 works out to £80. The formula is: VAT amount = Net price × (Rate ÷ 100).
Does this calculator include import duty?
No — this is a VAT calculator, not a combined duty and VAT calculator. Import duty (customs duty) is a separate charge based on the goods' commodity code and country of origin, worked out independently of VAT. If you're importing goods, check the duty rate with your customs authority first, then use this tool to calculate the VAT amount on top.
Can I use a custom VAT rate, like 5%?
Yes — click "Use a custom rate instead" below the amount field and enter any percentage, such as 5% for a reduced rate, and the calculator will add or remove VAT using that figure instead of the selected country's standard rate.
