Despite the rise of mutual funds and direct equity investing, the Public Provident Fund (PPF) remains a cornerstone of the average Indian's retirement portfolio. But what makes it so special?
Current PPF Interest Rate
7.1% per annum, compounded annually, for the July–September 2026 quarter (unchanged since April 1, 2020). The Ministry of Finance reviews and announces the rate every quarter — check back each quarter, since it can move even though it has been stable for several years.
What is PPF?
Introduced in 1968, the PPF is a savings-cum-tax-saving instrument backed by the Government of India. The primary objective is to mobilize small savings by offering an investment with reasonable returns combined with income tax benefits.
The EEE Status
The biggest advantage of PPF is its "Exempt-Exempt-Exempt" (EEE) tax status. Very few financial instruments in India enjoy this:
- Exempt 1 (Investment): The amount you invest (up to ₹1.5 Lakhs per year) is deductible from your taxable income under Section 80C.
- Exempt 2 (Interest): The interest earned every year is completely tax-free.
- Exempt 3 (Maturity): The entire maturity amount, when withdrawn after 15 years, is tax-free.
Key Rules to Remember
- Lock-in Period: The standard maturity is 15 years, but it can be extended indefinitely in blocks of 5 years.
- Investment Limits: You must invest a minimum of ₹500 and a maximum of ₹1,50,000 in a financial year.
- Safety: Since it is backed by the sovereign guarantee of the Indian Government, it is essentially risk-free.
- Compounding: Interest is calculated monthly but compounded annually. It's best to deposit your money before the 5th of the month to maximize interest.
How to Open a PPF Account
- Visit any nationalized or major private bank branch, or a post office, and ask for a PPF account-opening form (Form A / equivalent).
- Submit KYC documents: PAN, Aadhaar, a photograph, and address proof.
- Make the minimum opening deposit of ₹500 (cheque, cash, or online transfer if opening via net banking).
- Most major banks (SBI, HDFC, ICICI, and others) also let existing customers open a PPF account entirely online through net banking, avoiding a branch visit.
- You can hold only one PPF account in your own name (a second account for a minor child is allowed, subject to the combined ₹1.5 lakh annual limit).
PPF vs. ELSS vs. NSC vs. FD
PPF is one of several Section 80C options. Here is how it stacks up against the other popular choices:
| Instrument | Lock-in | Returns | Tax on Maturity | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PPF | 15 years | 7.1% (fixed, govt-set quarterly) | Tax-free (EEE) | None (sovereign-backed) |
| ELSS Mutual Funds | 3 years | Market-linked, historically 10-14% long-term | LTCG tax above ₹1.25 lakh/year | Market risk |
| NSC | 5 years | ~7.7% (fixed, govt-set quarterly) | Taxable as income | None (sovereign-backed) |
| Tax-saver FD | 5 years | ~6.5-7.5% (bank-dependent) | Taxable as income | None (bank deposit insurance up to ₹5 lakh) |
PPF wins on pure tax efficiency (nothing else on this list is fully tax-free at maturity) and safety, but has the longest lock-in and no market upside. ELSS has the shortest lock-in and the highest long-term return potential, at the cost of market risk and a shorter EEE-equivalent status. Most financial planners recommend a mix rather than putting the full ₹1.5 lakh 80C limit into any single one.
Calculate Your Returns
Because of the power of compounding, investing ₹1.5 Lakhs every year for 15 years at the current interest rate yields a substantial tax-free corpus. You can calculate exactly how much wealth you can build by using our PPF Calculator.
Conclusion
Even if you have an aggressive risk appetite and invest heavily in equities, having a debt allocation in the form of PPF provides stability to your portfolio, acting as a financial cushion during market downturns.
